Q: Adultery is quite common in marriages and long term relationships: Overall, 47 per cent of married men are likely to get involved (emotionally and/or sexually) with someone else, as are 35 per cent of married women. Do you find that shocking?
CHI: The first thing to say is that it is always shocking when you discover that your partner has been cheating on you. Even if you know the stats, even if you know that your relationship is rocky, even if you’ve been suspecting it—discovering that it’s happened to you feels like a punch in the stomach. And that’s because it’s the death of the dream of trust, the dream that however wildly imperfect your partner is he would never do anything deliberately to hurt you.
And it’s the shock of knowing that things will never be the same. The two of you may recover. You may recover completely. In many ways things can turn out better than they were, if underlying problems are addressed. It just won’t be the same.
But if the question is, Am I shocked that there’s so much of this going on?, then the answer, sigh, is no. (more…)
