Where the modern American marriage is going, and why you should care
It used to be so easy. “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Susie with a baby carriage.” It was like . . . a rule of nature. Today anything goes. Love without marriage, marriage without love, love without children, children without marriage–you name it. The positive spin on all this is that we have options. And indeed we do. And options are a good thing. In the bad old days when men and especially women had no options outside of a traditional marriage, people were too often simply trapped, and misery and mental illness too often followed. No one who is honest and informed about what life was like back then wants to go back there.
But just because they were the bad old days doesn’t mean that everything is hunky-dory now. It isn’t. We are, in fact, in trouble. And we’d better understand what’s going on. (more…)
