How breaking up takes different paths

Last time we talked about how many different meanings the word “over” has when it comes to different breakups.  The point being: you never know where you’re going to end up.  Well, as it turns out, it’s also true that you never know how you’re going to get there.  Today, as I promised (sorry for the delay!), let’s talk about that.  Because when you’re contemplating a break up, or going through one, you need hope and perspective.  And you can get it. A lovely woman sent us a lovely message on Facebook yesterday. 

“I read your book “Is He Mr. Right?” (with much enthusiasm) & cannot stop telling all my friends & even complete strangers about it!!! I would describe you as a relationship genius & believe it should be mandatory for all young women to read your book before entering into the dating scene, lol!  I hope & pray that my own “Mr Right” comes into my life really soon, instead of him just lingering in my dreams. We really appreciate messages like this.  It’s great to know we’re appreciated, and it helps get the word out about our work to other people.  And messages come up on Facebook all the time.

People often ask us what book we’re proudest of.  Well, one answer is, All of them.  We put our best into all of them, and they’ve all helped a lot of people.  But deep down we’d have to say that there is no book we’re prouder of than Women & Love.  To tell you why, we might have to do a little boasting, but then again they say that if it’s true it ain’t boasting, and in fact Women & Love does something amazing.  (more…)

How breakups come in different flavors

Let’s talk about breaking up.  Not you and me!  I hope we’ll be together forever!  But I’m talking about the breakups we’ve all thought about with the love interest in our lives.  And most of us hate and fear those breakups.  Even if we’re in a bad relationship, we’re still reluctant to break up.  The pain!  The agony!  The loneliness!  The freedom!!  But what if we need to look at breakups in a whole new way? Working our souls to the bone

Yesterday was Sunday, the day before Labor Day.  And for us here it was a day to relax and…work.  And work we did.  There were hours of chores, mostly Fall Cleaning.  And, in a way that would have surprised my grandparents, there were hours of work work.  Emails.  Going over notes.  Preparing to teach a grad school course.  And today, Labor Day itself, there’s more work.  Like, well, this blog I’m writing.  Not that it isn’t a labor of love!  But it’s still labor.  And, believe it or not, we’re also seeing a couple of patients.  Not that this is what I’d prefer.  Not that this is what’s they’d prefer.  But they too work very hard.  We meet when we can because with everyone working so hard, it’s hard to find time to meet. 

And that’s the point.  We’re all working really hard these days.  More than you might think.  This isn’t just self pity.  It’s backed up by some amazing facts.  (more…)

A new phenomenon: the single-but-married woman

We’ve all heard of the no-fault divorce.  Now there’s the no-difference divorce.  This occurs when two people are so busy and their lives so disconnected that one partner starts feeling, “Hey, why not get divorced?  It wouldn’t make a difference to how I live.  There’d just be less aggravation.”

There is more and more of this going around.  Think about it.  With women marrying later and later, when they do get married a lot of women already have their strongest, deepest relationship with their girlfriends.  They want to be married and they may want to have a baby, but do they really want a relationship with a man?  And even if they might want such a relationship, is he available for it?  Or is he too busy and too distracted?  How can two people have a marriage when the only way they are on each other’s radar screens is when they annoy each other?
