OK, maybe you shouldn’t fire your doctor. The point is that an essential part of your feeling well and being well is your making sure that YOU are in charge of everything involving your health. It happens a lot more often than you might think. People enter a kind of love limbo where the boundaries and definitions of who they are to each other get confused. Friends with benefits (interesting new research here), marrieds who don’t sleep together, people getting divorced who continue to sleep together, relationships where working together and loving each other get blurred and tangled, and lots of other ways to be in the no-man’s-land of relationships. One day a couple came to us who were both psychiatrists. Their relationship was not in great shape. They came right out and said that they didn’t know whether they should keep trying or just pull the plug on the whole thing. It’s not that they wanted us to tell them what to do. But they did want clear solid information about what it would be best for them to do.And that hit us between the eyes.
