Does an affair mean your marriage is over?
by Mira and Charles on March 18th, 2008So there was Elliot Spitzer, the previous governor of New York, resigning because he was consorting with call girls. Now it turns out that the new governor of New York, David Paterson, and his wife Michelle were both unfaithful to each other during a bad patch in their marriage. Let’s not judge the Paterson’s. But note this … they stopped cheating, went into therapy, and healed their relationship. This happens all the time. Not just affairs, but the healing too. It’s better not to have an affair. But it is smart to believe in the possibility of healing.
There are only two absolutely necessary ingredients: You have to want to heal. And you have to get help. If you’ve got those two, you’re in better shape than you might think. A great place to start: our forthcoming book, When Good People Have Affairs. If you, or your partner, or anyone you care about is involved in an affair, check out this book. You’ll be glad you did.
Now I know that about 46% (that’s right!!!) of you in committed relationships have had to deal with one side of an affair or another. So how did you deal with it? What do you wish you’d done? What are you glad you’ve done? How did it all turn out? Please: your experiences will help many others.
