Should we listen to Prozac?

by Mira and Charles on January 28th, 2008

Depression affects millions of people.  That means that there’s a good chance, over the course of your lifetime, that you will either experience significant depression or find yourself in a relationship with someone who’s depressed.  What do you do about it?  Too often we think, well, I’ll just go to the doctor and get Prozac.  But research has been accumulating that shows that popping a pill, by itself, won’t get the job done.  And today new research has just come out  that reveals once again how we have placed too much reliance on medication like Prozac.  It turns out that when you include unpublished studies Prozac’s effect is barely distinguishable from the placebo.

What does this mean for you?  If you or a loved one are depressed get treated in the right way.  Use a combination of cognitive/behavioral therapy with the best therapist you can find along with drug therapy from the best psychopharmacologist you can find.
