Nothing!
by Mira and Charles on August 4th, 2009Nothing is good. We all need a lot more nothing in our lives. We need it desperately. Let me explain.
A lovely TV news anchor was telling me about a small miracle that happened in her life. With two little kids and lots of friends her life is blessed and busy. Too busy. And that’s not a blessing. One weekend, a whole bunch of plans fell through. It was just her and her kids with nothing to do. IT WAS THE BEST WEEKEND OF THE SUMMER.
And that’s the way it is with most of us. We lead way, WAY overcommitted lives. We live as if we were desperately afraid of nothing happening, when nothing happening is what we’re most hungry for.
Here’s what you need to do. Tell the merry-go-round, Stop, I want to get off. Stop making plans. Cancel plans you have. Give yourself a weekend a month with nothing going on, a day a week for nothing, an hour or so a day devoted to nothing. You’re starving for it. You know you need it. So please, I beg you, give it to yourself.
It’s why we meditate and do yoga: we are trying to create islands of nothing in our lives. It’s just that we need a lot more of it.
You will flourish with some nothing in your life like a flower bed that’s been longing for rain.
