The biggest Mother’s Day mistake
by Mira and Charles on May 4th, 2009We’ll make this short and sweet. The single biggest Mother’s Day mistake is … not telling your mom why you love her and not telling your child why you love him or her. All the cards and flowers and candy in the world, all the banners and balloons proclaiming “To the Greatest Mom in the World” don’t have the effect of sitting down with your mom or child and saying, “You know why I love you? There was that time…” and then you point out one incident, one moment in your lives together that captures what makes your mom or kid special to you.
You know why this works? The reason people don’t feel loved the way they should is that they don’t feel seen. A room full of flowers are great, but they don’t show that you really see your mom. Gifts are too generic.
But if you can point to one time when your mom or kid did something wonderfully loving or sweet or endearing or generous, well, just knowing that you see that and remember that can make your relationship so much more warm and close.
Try it. You’ll be glad you did.
And let me know how it works. I’d be delighted to create the world’s largest list of the things we remember about our moms or our kids that remind of why we love them
And by the way, one reason we love you is for all the wonderful emails you continue to send us about how one of our books have changed your lives. We’re so grateful for your bothering to let us know that. It warms our hearts like nothing else.
Love, Mira and Charles
